Pismo Pier Plaza
The Pismo Pier Plaza project stemmed from the Pismo Beach Downtown Core Vision and Strategic Plan that RRM completed in 2014. Driven by community input, the project team made an array of updates and renovations to modernize the plaza that was last worked on by RRM back in 1986. Iconic, 8-foot tall Pismo Beach letters act as a central photo-op spot at the center of the plaza. Paving throughout this central area is formatted in a diamond format to mimic the diamond format of the pier itself. Behind the letters, nestled in the corner of the plaza, RRM designed a beachfront park that boasts an array of beach themed play structures. A breaching humpback whale is the iconic centerpiece of this unexpected play area in addition to surfboard seating areas. The beautiful pieces were chosen not only for their striking sculptural quality but also for their natural wood construction that will withstand the unforgiving ocean environment better than steel. All the play experiences are at ground level, and the protective surfacing blends seamlessly into the surrounding plaza pavement, making the environment barrier-free. But by popular vote, the highlight of the plaza is two concrete slides that whisk giddy beachgoers of all ages from the plaza onto the sand 16-feet below – putting an exclamation mark on a memorable experience. Additional improvements include accessible access to the beach, a dedicated airstream section of the Pier for local businesses and restaurants, as well as a newly constructed restroom that seamlessly blends in with the pier.
