Hayward Community Gardens
Located in the Jackson Triangle neighborhood in Hayward, CA, this large existing community garden had served an essential social service for the community as well as yielding thousands of pounds in produce annually for gardeners. However, after many years of use, the well-loved community garden was in need of rebuilding. RRM was hired by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District to prepare a master plan for the 5-acre site and provided construction documentation and construction support for the implementation of the first phase of the project development. Recently opened, the first phase of construction features over 70 garden plots and raised redwood beds, a gathering area to accommodate community picnicking, an outdoor classroom for garden education and demonstrations, and garden facilities such as a greenhouse, seed propagation, and compost area. The overall goal of the project was to revitalize and refresh this important community asset so it could once again provide fruits and vegetables for local families and restore its role as a community hub.
