Furman Park Improvements
As one of the largest recreational facilities in Downey, Furman Park has been a go-to destination for over 60 years. Thanks to its popularity, Furman Park was selected as a recipient of Measure S sales tax funds and the design phase began in July of 2018. With a wide array of park uses and strong community engagement, the Furman Park project demanded an “all-hands” approach in order to deliver a successful project on the accelerated timeline. Construction was completed in July of 2020. Existing facilities have been improved across the board, including building remodels, sport court resurfacing, irrigation, and an entire reseed of park recreational turf. A common concern heard from the community was the lack of parking. By analyzing park usage, engineers were able to add 13 additional parking spaces and an improved circulation pattern. Drainability issues were addressed via pervious pavement and a bioswale. Ambitious scheduling demands were laid out from the start, and City staff and their consultants worked together to complete the Furman Park improvements in two years. Community feedback continues to be very positive.
