A long-standing community market in Ventura, California, this local staple was sold to a small investor in 2018. In contact with 7-Eleven, the new owner agreed to redevelop the building. Designed in 1939, this former Safeway prototype underwent a historic renovation.
Although this project received initial disinterest from the community, the building’s final design and improvement generated real public merit. The new building facade entails a modern shop-front aesthetic, fresh site walls, and trash enclosure. The building also includes an automated laundromat in the rear of the market with family-oriented services—such as a children’s area, free Wi-Fi, and media entertainment. Honoring the original market’s design, with both historic and contemporary elements, this renovative project received a Poinsettia Design Award from the Ventura Chamber of Commerce.
